Winner of the ImpACT Award for Dance 2016, Sunnyboy Motau began his formal training in 2008 at Moving into Dance Mophatong (MIDM) as part of the Performing Arts Training Course (PATC) after years of performing with community arts groups in Alexandra. Post PATC he was selected to further his training for another two years and joined the MIDM Professional Dance Company.
As a dancer, teacher and choreographer for the Company and the students of the PATC at MIDM he continues to flourish as an expert Afrofusion dance teacher. His first choreographed solo “Within Me” was presented at the Dance Umbrella 2010 as part of the Stepping Stones Programme and subsequently at MIDM’s “Dancing into Summer” season.
His performance history includes touring and performing nationally and internationally with MIDM’s Company. In 2010 he participated in the Crossings International Workshops and worked with Michel Kelemenis and Vincent Mantsoe. He toured extensively with Robyn Orlin’s “Beauty Remained…” in Europe, Canada, South America and Australia and in France this year. He recently completed a collaborative choreography with British/Israeli choreographer Rachel Erdos, ‘fight, flight, feathers, f***ers’ which premiered at the 2015 Dance Umbrella Festival and was named one of the top five works of the festival. His choreography, “Man-Longing” was performed on the main programme of National Arts Festival in 2015 and his collaborative work ‘feathers …’ was performed at NAF 2016 and was part of the MIDM programme that received an Ovation Award. His collaboration with Jessica Nupen, ‘R & J: Rebellion and Johannesburg’ toured Germany for a month in 2015, then Italy in 2016 and has been invited to be performed in Greece in July 2017.
He has received commissions for original works by The Playhouse Company and The Market Theatre where both works received rave reviews. He created a new solo piece performed at the HIFA Festival in Harare in 2016 called “My Black is Black”. He toured Russia as part of the Russian / South African Season in 2016. His choreographic piece, “I am NoT” was commissioned by Dance Umbrella 2017 and has choreographed a new work for Oakfields College to be premiered at this year’s National Arts Festival. He was also an ACT Scholarship Adjudicator this year.
Sunnyboy was named among the Mail and Guardians Top 100 young South Africans to watch in 2016.
