Sunnyboy Motau began his training with a few community arts groups in Alexandra, but in 2008 Motau joined MID as part of the Performing Arts Training Course (PATC). He was later selected to further his training, and joined the professional dance company, and now dances with, and choreographs for MID’s professional dance company.
His first choreographed solo “Within me” was presented at the Dance Umbrella 2010 as part of the Stepping Stones Programme and subsequently at MID’s “Dancing into Summer” season. His performance history includes touring and performing nationally and internationally in different theatres and festivals with MID’s Company.
In 2010 he participated in the Crossings International Workshops and worked with Michel Kelemenis and Vincent Mantsoe. He toured extensively with Robyn Orlin’s “Beauty Remained…” in Europe, Canada, South America and Australia. He recently completed a collaborative choreography with British/Israeli choreographer Rachel Erdos, which premiered at the 2015 Dance Umbrella Festival and was named one of the top five works of the festival.
His choreography, “Man-Longing” just returned from the National Arts Festival where it was performed on the main programme. He is currently collaborating with Jessica Nupen on Rebellion and Johannesburg which will tour Germany for a month in September. He continues teaching the MID first years Afrofusion theory and practical and does classes for the MIDM dance company. He also teaches at a community groups and schools in Alexandra.
“I came to MID as a rough diamond and with the education and training I got here, I became a professional dancer, choreographer and teacher within the company and in my community too. MID has groomed me into being what I am and exposed me to different choreographies and productions.”
