Presented by Moving Into Dance Mophatong
Venue: Centenary Hall, Grahamstown
Duration: 1 Hour
Celebrating 38 years in the SA Dance Industry, Moving Into Dance Mophatong (MIDM) proudly presents a programme of exhilarating new dance works by its male dancers.
The season showcases four pieces of riveting dance. Including ‘Road’, choreographed by Oscar Buthelezi, which analyses the dilemmas of the path as both the destination and the route that guides us there.
This work recently clinched Oscar Buthelezi an historical double award in Germany in May. He was awarded both the Audience Choice Award and the prestigious Jury Award for the Kurt Jooss Choreography Prize – the first time a South African was one of 3 finalists (from 70 choreographers in 26 countries) and the first South African choreographer to win the prize.
‘fight, flight, feathers, f***ers’, originally commissioned by Dance Umbrella, is a choreographic collaboration between Rachel Erdos and MIDM’s Sunnyboy Mandla Motau, exploring the politics and physicality of masculinity.
The work was in the top five works presented at Dance Umbrella 2015 – a year of recognition for Motau who was nominated for a Naledi Award in the Sophie Mgcina Best New Emerging Voice category and was one of Mail & Guardian’s Top 200 Young South Africans.
The programme will also feature ‘Everlast’ choreographed and performed by Eugene Mashiane, and Sunnyboy Motau’s new solo work ‘My Black Is Black’ which premiered in Harare in May. These two solo pieces will alternate at each performance.
MIDM presents Afro Fusion dance that is thought-provoking, innovative, yet accessible and is characterized by its sheer, evocative physical beauty.
