Meet Our Dancers

Motau dances and choreographs for MIDM’s Professional Dance Company. He began his training with the community arts groups in Alexandra. In 2008 he joined MIDM as part of the Performing Arts Training Course (PATC).
His first choreographed solo, “Within Me”, was presented at the Dance Umbrella 2010 as part of the Stepping Stones Programme and subsequently at MIDM’s “Dancing into Summer” season. In 2010 he participated in the Crossings International Choreography Workshops and worked with Michel Kelemenis and Vincent Mantsoe. He toured world-wide with Robyn Orlin’s “Beauty Remained…”, and he toured Russia as part of the Russian / South African Season in 2016.
He recently completed a collaborative choreography with British/Israeli choreographer, Rachel Erdos, which premiered at the 2015 Dance Umbrella Festival and was named one of the top five works of the festival. His choreography, “Man-Longing” (2015) and “Feathers…” (2016) was performed at the National Arts Festival. Motau was part of the Moving into Dance programme that received an Ovation Award. His collaboration with Jessica Nupen on “Romeo & Juliet: Rebellion and Johannesburg” toured Germany (2015) and Italy (2016).
Motau’s commissioned works for the Durban Playhouse and The Market Theatre received rave reviews. His choreographic piece, “I am NoT” was commissioned by and performed at Dance Umbrella 2017. He created a new solo piece performed at the HIFA Festival in Harare in 2016, called “My Black is Black”. He choreographed “Umzuzu” and “Lucky No.16” in 2016. Motau won the ImpAct Award for Choreography in 2016. Motau was also named among the Mail and Guardians top 100 young people to watch.
